Our Story
Who We Are?
The Fossil-Free Ocean Initiative is a global collective of civil society organizations, researchers, communities and individuals working to end fossil fuel activities in the ocean and along our coasts. United by a shared commitment to protect marine life and the people who depend on it, we advocate for the phaseout of oil and gas activities at sea and the prevention of new developments. Our mission is to protect the natural ocean ecosystem and promote a just, equitable transition to renewable energy that ensures a sustainable future for all.
Why We Act?
Oil and gas activity poses a huge threat to the health of the ocean, marine biodiversity, and local communities economically dependent on it. Every phase of this industry—from exploration and drilling to transport, waste dumping, and infrastructure abandonment—has harmful impacts on marine ecosystems and the people who depend on the ocean for food, income, and cultural heritage. The ocean crisis is inherently a climate crisis and, as such, it affects us all.
What do we need for a fossil-free ocean?
